The Economy of Obesity
A recent study estimated annual medical spending due to overweight and obesity (BMI > 25) to be as much as $92.6 billion in 2002 dollars (9.1 percent of U.S. health expenditures).
The cost of lost productivity related to obesity (BMI > 30) among Americans ages 1764 is $3.9 billion. This value considers the following annual numbers (for 1994):
Workdays lost related to obesity:
39.3 million
Physician office visits related to obesity:
62.7 million
Restricted activity days related to obesity:
239.0 million
Bed-days related to obesity: 89.5 million
The personal costs of diminished health due to obesity are priceless. Early death, disability, poor quality of life and the cost of care and treatment for weight-related and/or weight-induced medical conditions. The financial and emotional costs to families pale in comparison to seeking professional help with a qualified weight management center.

The most common question heard in the Lutheran Weight Management Center is "Will I be successful?"
Let's start with what is your definition of success. When thinking about this, think not only about pounds lost, but also the possibility of becoming healthier, both physically and emotionally. Many participants report experiencing a higher quality of life and greatly improved health status. Self-esteem and physical activity can increase while a reduction in fatigue, high blood pressure and joint related pain is possible with weight loss.
Roughly one in four participants who participate in a program like this maintain 75 percent or more of their initial weight loss when surveyed 2 years after completing the program. Common characteristics shared by these successful 'maintainers' include an increase in activity level compared to previous weight loss patterns, a change to a lower-calorie style of eating that includes eating more vegetables and fruits and less fat-laden foods, a continued connection with the Lutheran Weight Management Center for the first 6 months after completing weight loss and a change in dealing with triggers and patterns that stimulate inappropriate eating habits.
If you want to become like these people and you are ready to take the steps necessary to develop your own personal balance of good eating, attitude and activity, then you are ready to begin the Program. Call now for more information about the program. We look forward to accompanying you on your journey to a healthier weight and to a health-promoting lifestyle.
