  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital perform northeastern Indiana's first heart transplant surgery.
  • The first heart institute in the region is created.
  • The regional sleep studies laboratory opens.
1986
  • The Children's Cancer Center opens.
1987
  • Lutheran becomes the first hospital in northeastern Indiana and only the second in the state at which physicians implant a Jarvik 7-70 total artificial heart.
  • A pediatric intensive care unit specializing in the treatment of critically ill children is created.
1988
  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital perform the first stress echocardiogram in the area.
  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital become the first in the region to perform an artificial heart implant.
1989
  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital conduct the first heart lung transplant and the first lung transplant in northeastern Indiana.
  • A neonatal intensive care unit to care for the sickest of newborns opens.

  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital conduct the first dobutaine stress echocardiogram in the community.
  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital perform a heart transplant in a patient older than 70, a regional first.
  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital become the first in the world to perform a heart transplant from a donor older than 55.
  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital perform the first video cholecystectomy in the area.

  • The first dedicated outpatient cath lab and the first heart center in northeastern Indiana opens.

  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital perform the first radio-frequency catheter ablation for heart rhythm.

  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital conduct the first coronary flex-stent and the first coronary intravascular ultrasound.
1994
  • Physicians at Lutheran Hospital perform the first coronary transluminal extraction catheter.

  • Plans for the creation of Lutheran Children's Hospital are announced.
