Knowing your risk factors for stroke and changing your lifestyle can save your life. Some risk factors, like age and family history cannot be controlled, but others, like the amount of activity you get each day and whether or not you smoke, can be. You are at greater risk of having a stroke if you:

  • Are age 55 or older
  • Have a family history of stroke
  • Have had a stroke
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Smoke
  • Have diabetes
  • Have heart or vascular disease
  • Have a high red blood cell count
  • Are overweight
  • Are not physically active

To reduce your risk of stroke:

  • Don't smoke
  • Don't abuse alcohol or drugs
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Control your blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Pay attention to the warning signs of a stroke
