Hyperbaric Medicine (HBO)
The specialists at Lutheran Hospital understand that chronic wounds, crush injuries, carbon monoxide poisoning and other emergent conditions can be challenging to treat and difficult to heal. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or hyperbaric medicine, is a non-invasive way to help heal tissue damage caused by:
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Crush injuries
- Gangrene
- Necrotizing fasciitis
- Non-healing wounds
- Pressure sores
- Radiation side effects
- Skin grafts
How It Works
Patients relax in a single-person chamber, breathing pure oxygen and experiencing higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure. This combination increases the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. As the enriched blood travels through the body, it enhances wound healing.
Each chamber features a bed and TV to make sessions more comfortable. The only sensation patients experience during therapy is a fullness in their ears similar to traveling in the mountains or on an airplane. Time per session and number of treatments needed varies.
The hyperbaric chambers are located in the Outpatient Wound Clinic, located at 7900 W. Jefferson Blvd., Suite 202 (MOB 1). The clinic offers specialized care for serious or complicated wounds. Physician referrals are required for chamber therapy, but are not necessary for other wound care services.
