Neonatal Intensive Care
Premature babies from 32 weeks' gestation and full-term babies needing a little extra assistance are cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Providing care for these infants requires technology and experience specifically geared toward caring for critically ill newborns. Neonatologists are available 24 hours a day to provide intense medical attention to our tiniest patients, while nurses specially trained in neonatal care give constant attention to help babies and their parents through difficult times.
The Lutheran Hospital NICU possesses resources to serve families in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. The team recognizes the individual needs of all families and strives to provide the highest level of specialized care for each baby.
Once infants have been discharged from the NICU, a team of specialized pediatric and development specialists will work with infants who need continued care. Babies are seen by specially trained neonatal physical, occupational and speech therapists and dietitians who all help ensure infants thrive to reach their maximum potential of development.
NICU Visiting Hours
New moms need rest and parents need time to bond with their newest bundle of joy. Friends and family should always ask the nurses whether or not now is a good time to visit before entering a room. If mom needs privacy, nurses will direct guests to a comfortable waiting area.
Services and Special Features
The NICU team provides nurturing, developmental care for babies in a soothing, family-centered environment. Family members receive special attention as well, with staff available to answer questions, provide encouragement, talk with baby's siblings, or just listen to mom or dad.
