Bypass Surgery to Treat Heart Disease
Coronary artery disease damages the arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart. This damage limits blood flow and, if left untreated, can lead to advanced heart disease, including heart attack. Patients with coronary artery disease may experience subtle to intense symptoms that include:
- Chest pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath
- Pain in one or both arms, the neck, shoulders, jaw or back
- Weakness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Stomach or abdominal pain or discomfort
- Cold sweats
- Lightheadedness
When a coronary artery is diseased or blocked, the surgeons at Lutheran Heart Center use a section from a healthy artery to bypass the affected artery and restore blood flow to the heart. Known as coronary artery bypass surgery, this procedure relieves symptoms and improves circulation. The surgical specialists use techniques including minimally invasive approaches for improved outcomes and longer-term cardiovascular health.
